Property tax break could spur Albany development

Albany city officials are using a little-used provision in state tax law to encourage developers to convert commercial buildings to residential uses.

The tax abatement has been available in Albany for seven years with no takers, but now the city has a bigger incentive to offer: saving on school taxes, too.
Since school taxes make up the lion’s share of local property tax bills, city officials believe they now have a more effective tool to promote economic development.
